André J de Saint Phalle :||: Vermont Memoirist

I'm André J de Saint Phalle (born 1952), a Vermont-based memoirist writing
The Spaces Between trilogy—fifty years tracking one man's evolution from
compulsive wanderer to reluctant settler.I'm the nephew of sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle, whose fierce spirit became
my unexpected guardian angel. My grandfather André de Saint Phalle built a
$33 million Wall Street banking empire before the 1929 crash. My father was
a Harvard-educated financier who raised six children like racehorses before
abandoning us all when three dropped out of college. My mother Joannie Furlong—a Cambridge girl who lost her father at twelve—created
the world of unconditional love that saved us.In 1973, at 21, I stole $80 and hitchhiked 4,000 miles across America. Jerry
Garcia blessed my guitar. I witnessed UFOs off Bixby Bridge. A vision in a
Texas canyon pointed toward water and the woman who moves like tides. That
became Surfing the Interstates, published in 2025.I've been making photographs for over fifty years, play guitar and build
multi-track recordings, and share my Vermont life with two dogs and my
wife Veronica, whom I met through my golden retriever in 1997.This is where perpetual motion finally learned to be still.
